While this film of one of the epic struggles of WWII is over 50 years old, it still delivers the drama of the battle fought by Russian soldiers and sailors to defend Leningrad. Codenamed “Operation Barbarrosa” by Hitler, the battle was truly horrific. This documentary, The Great Battle of the Volga, focuses 0n the bravery and suffering of the Russian soldiers as they endure the tremendous attack by the well-equipped German army. That they could regroup and fight back with such ferocity is depicted, along with the terrible destruction caused by the Germans

@ponsuresh2001 Americans hate hearing it was Russia that bore the overwhelming responsibility of defeating the Nazis. When the Allies landed in France 75% of the Wehrmacht was deployed on the Eastern front. The Americans could never have sustained the casualties the Red Army did. The Russians suffered more casualties at Stalingrad & Kursk than American & British Empire forces did in the entire war. In fairness to the British though they did stand alone against the Nazis after the fall of France.

Leningrad is not on the Volga. This movie is about Stalingrad. And like nickkarlrocks says, the battle was not called “Barbarrosa”. Furthermore, the invasion was codenamed “Barbarossa”. The text above is mistyped. Interesting movie, though a little propagandised.

Operation Barbarrosa wasn’t the name of the battle, but the initial assault by Axis forces against the Soviet Union.

@fullsjuk OK, I see emotions substitute arguments. Because you are not educated enough to challenge me. I’m not Stalinist, there is no politics in what I’m stating. Pure and cynic realism. Russia offered more land to Finns instead of what they demanded. And they had opportunity to capture Helsinki during Winter war. They had same opportunity in 1944. They never did so. Both times truce was signed. Because of stiff resistance and strong international mediation for Finland.

@mithrae73 now you speak like a true stalinist, you say that russia went to war because stalin the great pig felt that russia needed more land.thats only a pour excuse for the russian lust for blood and land.what kind of compensation did they offer finland??yes now i remember,we(russia)move the border a little closer to helsinki the finnish capital so we have an excelent start for our future attacks on finland and in return we also keep karelia and the petsamo valley…..

@fullsjuk First time they went to war against Finland (winter war), because its pre-war border, was too close to Leningrad, one of the major industrial center and the only naval base, available to Russians in Baltics. Finns were highly unfriendly towards USSR so Stalin seeking to protect Leningrad attempted to re-negotiate the borders, offering compensation. He feared, that Finnish territory could be used by others for rapid assault on Leningrad. 2nd war was initiated by Finns, not Russia.

@HubertWolfen I assume you are not reading what I stated above – they invaded poland after it was defeated, its generals and government fled the country. It wa done to have German-Russian border several hundred kilometers to the west. Ortherwise Moscow could have felt in 1941. Have you heard about tens of thousands of red troopers, dead in Polish concentration camps in early 1920ies?

@oppostaf, If it was your grandad who fought Russians, how come you were born. He must have been hiding in a hole somewhere or surrendered as soon as he heard a shot fired. If he survived as a pow, that goes to show what good people the Russians were. So I’d think first before talking you nazi piece of shit. My father and his mates didn’t see the white flags the nazis held up when Hitler ran out of ” decent German soldiers.” ”Crack troops” shit at sight of an 18 inch bayonet. K.J. Edmonton.
